Families are like weather

Families are a complicated system of interacting parts that result in events. Sometimes these events are pleasant and sometimes extremely destructive.

Family therapy can help each member to feel seen and heard and to remember the innate goodness of every other person in their family.

Reduce blame and negativity, and increase positive feelings of connectedness

Increase your insight into your own contributions to conflict, as well as to your loved ones’ unspoken motives and desires.

How family therapy helps

To help families achieve their goals, we’ll gain understanding about your family structures, hierarchy, the function of each relationship, and how attachment works in your family. This approach allows us to work together to address your unique needs.

We’ll start by getting to know each other and the situation that brings you to counseling. As a team, we’ll decide the best way to proceed.

How long will this take?

When the children are adolescents, the whole family can meet together from the very first session. A minimum of 8 sessions is often necessary to get to the core of what is going on, and at least 12 to learn new ways of approaching problematic patterns and generalizing those new skills into other areas of life.

For more complicated family concerns, the number becomes what the family needs, and frequent re-evaluation of progress can help determine the length of therapy.

With young children, it serves for you to attend several sessions before bringing the child along. These early sessions give me the information I need to best be able to support the whole family system in growing and healing together, while providing a compassionate environment for the child to thrive and feel safe being their authentic self.
